Choosing the right pillow is crucial for sleep quality and cervical spine health. Here's a selection guide considering factors such as sleeping posture, body type, and material characteristics:
Choosing Pillow Height and Support Based on Sleeping Posture
Supine Sleeper:
Recommended pillow height: 8–12 cm, approximately the height of a fist.
The pillow should support the natural forward curve of the neck, preventing excessive forward or backward tilting of the head.
Optional materials: Memory foam, latex, which conform to the curve of the head and neck, providing even support.
Side Sleeper:
The recommended pillow height is the same as shoulder width, typically between 12–16 cm.
It needs to fill the gap between the head/neck and the mattress, keeping the spine in a straight line and reducing pressure on the shoulders and neck.
High-support memory foam or zoned latex pillows are recommended.
Prone Sleeper (Stomach Sleeper):
Choose a low, soft pillow (e.g., 5–8 cm) to avoid excessive twisting of the cervical spine. Down or low-density memory foam are more suitable, but it should be noted that sleeping on your stomach for a long time may be detrimental to cervical spine health.
