It's generally recommended to replace pillow cores every 1-2 years, but the specific interval depends on the material, frequency of use, individual health conditions, and environmental factors. Not replacing the pillow core for a long time can reduce support, affect cervical spine health, and may also breed mites, bacteria, and mold, triggering allergies, respiratory problems, and even skin inflammation.

Recommended Replacement Cycles for Different Pillow Core Materials Different materials age at different rates and pose different hygiene risks, so the replacement frequency should vary accordingly:

Memory Foam Pillow: 1.5–3 years. High-density pillows can last up to 3 years, while regular pillows show significant loss of elasticity and support after about 18 months.

Latex Pillow: 3–5 years. Natural latex has good antibacterial properties, but it easily yellows and sheds after oxidation. It may develop a musty odor after about 1 year of use, so it's recommended to evaluate and replace it every 3 years.

Down Pillow: 2–3 years. Down pillows lose fluffiness over time and are difficult to clean thoroughly after absorbing sweat. The optimal lifespan is 2–3 years.

Synthetic fiber pillows: 6–12 months. Prone to hardening and deformation, highly absorbent; recommended to replace at least once a year, or every six months for frequent users.

Buckwheat hull/cassia seed pillows: 1–1.5 years. Good breathability, but dirt and grime can accumulate in the crevices, making them susceptible to mold and insect infestation when damp; recommended to last no more than 1.5 years.

Cotton pillows: 6–12 months. Highly absorbent, but support deteriorates quickly and easily breeds microorganisms; recommended to replace within one year.
