How to Determine if a Pillow Core Needs Replacement?

Whether a pillow core needs replacement cannot be determined solely by its age. A comprehensive assessment should consider three measurable indicators: physical deformation, hygiene, and body feedback. Here are specific and practical methods for determining this:

Physical Support Performance Test (Core Indicator)

Folding and Rebound Test: Fold the pillow core in half and leave it for 30 seconds. Observe its recovery after releasing the fold:

Normal: The pillow core largely returns to its original shape within 10 seconds.

Needs Replacement: Slow rebound or noticeable creases indicate material fatigue and decreased support.

Pressure Recovery Test: Press firmly on the same spot on the pillow and leave it for 24 hours:

If the recovered height is more than 1.5cm lower than the original height, it indicates a significant decline in compression performance and an inability to effectively support the cervical spine.

Decreased Sleep Posture Adaptability

When lying on your back, the head sinks too deeply or hangs unsupported, resulting in a lack of neck support. When lying on your side, the shoulder presses into the pillow, causing head and neck misalignment, and shoulder pain upon waking. Neck pain and increased frequency of stiff neck may indicate that the pillow is no longer able to maintain the natural curvature of the cervical spine.

Hygiene and Aging Signals (Health Risks)

Yellowing and Obvious Stains: Yellow patches on the pillow core that cannot be washed off are caused by long-term penetration and oxidation of sweat and sebum, creating a breeding ground for mites and bacteria.

Persistent Odor: A sour, musty, or damp smell persists even after washing the pillowcase, indicating microbial growth inside the pillow core that is difficult to remove with regular airing.

Clumping, Collapse, or Shedding of Filling:

Hard lumps or fragments in memory foam; powdering or cracking on the surface of latex pillows; decreased loft and partial collapse in down pillows; broken or clumped buckwheat hulls. All these indicate material aging and require immediate replacement.
